Shopify Abandoned Cart Recovery on WhatsApp: Templates That Recover 15–30%
A Shopify visitor adds three items, reaches checkout, hesitates, and leaves. Roughly 7 in 10 carts end that way. The only follow-up most stores send is an email that lands in the Promotions tab — opened by 1 in 5 people, acted on by almost none.
WhatsApp changes that math. Stores running WhatsApp cart recovery typically recover 15–30% of abandoned carts — versus 2–5% for email — because a WhatsApp message has a ~98% open rate and arrives as a conversation, not a newsletter. For a Shopify store doing ₹5 lakh a month in sales, that's the difference between recovering ₹1–1.5 lakh of carts or leaving it on the table.
Why WhatsApp wins on Shopify
- Warm intent. Recovery is a timing game — the customer showed buying intent minutes ago. WhatsApp reaches them where they already chat, with no spam folder in the way.
- Two-way thread. A customer can reply "is the coupon still valid?" and get an answer in the same thread — turning a recovery attempt into a sale conversation. Email can't do that.
- Native Shopify flow. The right integration reads cart abandonment from your Shopify store, sends the sequence, and links back to the exact checkout — no zap-style glue.
The 6h / 24h / 72h sequence
- 6 hours — the gentle nudge. The buying mood is still warm. Remind them what's waiting; no discount needed yet.
- 24 hours — the value reminder. Re-state what's in the cart and why it matters. This is the highest-converting message in most cohorts.
- 72 hours — the final nudge. Last-chance framing, and only now a small incentive (free shipping or a limited code) if your margins allow.
Three messages max. Each one after that stops recovering carts and starts earning opt-outs — and opt-outs hurt your messaging reputation with Meta.
Template copy that works
6h: "Hey {{1}}, you left something in your cart at {{2}} — {{3}} is still waiting. Complete your order here: {{4}}"
24h: "{{1}}, your cart at {{2}} has {{3}} (₹{{4}}) ready to go. It's still reserved for you — finish checkout here: {{5}}"
72h: "Last call, {{1}}! Your {{2}} order is still in your cart. Use code {{3}} for free shipping — valid for the next 24 hours: {{4}}"
Each message follows the same anatomy: greeting → what's waiting → the CTA link. Cart recovery templates are MARKETING category — submit them as such, with realistic sample values, and keep copy close to the approved version (Meta requires it).
Timing and quiet hours
Send in the customer's evening (5–9pm works best for Indian stores), never at 2am. A recovery message that wakes someone up recovers nothing and earns an opt-out. If your store ships across timezones, send by the customer's local time, not the store's.
What to measure
- Recovery rate — carts recovered ÷ carts abandoned (target 15–30% on WhatsApp)
- Revenue recovered — the rupee value; the number your CFO cares about
- Opt-outs — should stay near zero
- Message-level conversion — which of the three messages converts best, so you can tune the sequence
